Wah Yan Old Boys v Swiss XI – Remainder of Abandoned Match Played on 5 November
Having received a report from the match official regarding the conduct of Swiss XI players prior to this match, the Disciplinary Sub-committee (DSC) in November decided to ban a Swiss XI player for four matches and to impose a fine of $1,000.
The incident arose from a dispute over the correct starting position of the play for the remaining 4 minutes (plus 3 minutes added time) of a match that had been abandoned on 25 September due to lighting problems. At the time of the match being abandoned, Wah Yan OB were leading 4-2 and Swiss XI had just been awarded a free kick.
In disputing the referee’s decision to re-start the match with a kick-off rather than a free kick, a Swiss XI player was reported to have repeatedly used foul language towards the match official and to have accused him of dishonesty.
Whilst recognising the player’s frustration at what he considered to be a misinterpretation of the Rules, the DSC felt that the conduct in question was unacceptable.
Swiss XI accepted the decision of the DSC, however they expressed their concern at the lack of clear guidance to referees on the procedure for re-starting abandoned matches. As a result, ExCo is considering an appropriate rule change that will be put to member teams for consideration at the next AGM.
