Red card and disciplinary incident – spitting

The Disciplinary Sub-committee (DSC) of the Yau Yee League has reviewed reports from the referee and both teams on an incident in a recent match that led to a player being given a red card for spitting at a match official. After receiving the red card, the player concerned made an obscene and insulting gesture to the referee.

The DSC considers spitting at the referee to be a serious case of abuse of a match official, and has fined the player $1,000 and suspended him for 6 matches.

The DSC also noted that the subsequent obscene and insulting gesture was a case of non-physical abuse of an official, and imposed the minimum penalty provided for under Disciplinary Guideline 7 of the Yau Yee Rules, namely a $500 fine and a suspension of 2 matches.

In total, the player in question was suspended for 8 matches and fined $1,500. The team in question did not appeal against the decision.
