The Weez Project Friendship Cup 2018 Thursday 30th August 2018

On Sunday, the Yau Yee League hosted “The Weez Project Friendship Cup 2018” at Kings Park. 15 teams battled it out in the name of raising money and awareness for The Weez Project and the KELY Support Group (two charities that do fantastic work here in Hong Kong).

It turned out to be a fantastic day with everyone getting involved in the right spirit on and off the pitch and a good amount of money was raised.

Both the Cup and Plate finals had late drama as the German All Stars lifted their first Friendship Cup and got over the disappointment of losing in the 2016 final. It could have been so different as opponents French Kiss hit the cross bar with the last kick of the game but it wasn’t to be and GAS, led by captain Kieran Robinson, came through 1-0.

In the Plate final Spartans hearts were broken as HKNFA scored with the very last kick, in a fantastic end to end game, to be crowned 3-2 winners. At least Spartans walked away victorious from the juggling competition (fair play to the 4 guys who stood in front of 200 hecklers and gave their all in this!).

In the trophy final Hearts, led by big summer recruit and old boy Paul “Oggy” Hodgson, defeated San Pellegrinos on penalties. It must be said the P’s did snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by missing their last three kicks (there has been a complaint that a window was smashed in the flats behind from one effort).

A special mention should go to Rovers and BTDT for battling it out with squads twice the age of the other teams. Unfortunately, on this occasion experience didn’t come through.

A fantastic day played in the right spirit with only 3 yellow cards in 42 games whilst enabling us to help raise awareness for the Weez Project and KELY Support Group.

Hopefully this event can go from strength to strength and a big thanks to all players and volunteers.

Good luck in the upcoming season.
